Ulysses Marshall “On The Outside, Looking In” b/w ”The Watchmen” - Self released 1974
Amazing poetry record dug up at Everyday Music. This is why I do what I do.
Patterns by Ulysses Marshall
Patterns that tell you
what to do,
when to do it,
how to do it,
I despise.
Because such patterns are formed to cause harm
To people who try to be free
Or who no longer have a longing for complete conformity
Patterns that make you become fed up, should be broke up
Patterns that make you bitter and mean
Patterns that control your destiny
Patterns that make you shout out against them in anger
Patterns that make you wonder about the possibility of self determination
Such patterns should be assassinated
To divert the internal death it causes
Patterns that dismantle the minds of men
Should be brought to an end
Most patterns ain’t fit for nothing but a wrecking crew
Wreckers, where are you?

Another cool reissue we picked up in Portland town. I can’t get enough Dyke and the Blazers lately. This has an alternate take of “Let A Woman Be a Woman” on the flip and I was playing that more. But now I’m in love with “Black Boy”. I love the turnaround and that Charles Wright was playing on it.
The only known footage of Dyke is on Youtube. Sad story that he was shot while sitting in a car in 1971. Glad that he got the funk down on tape.
And keep reissuing these singles! I’ll by (some of) them!
