MTV turns 30 this week. Three decades. We spent an hour last night watching old MTV footage on VH1 Classic. There is no way they’d play that old stuff on the actual channel. Old, analog, real is toxic to the new generation. Must have more Snooki!

Shannon’s “Let The Music Play” was on a VH1 One Hit Wonder show. I hadn’t heard this back in the day, but its sound and feel really bring me back to 1984. I was living in Fullerton with my dad, breaking as good as a 10 year old could out by the dumpster. I still have my “Electric Breakdance” tape. Tapes!

Anyway, I love this song now and freestyle, break, and dance songs are what will push us over to 12” records. I know it.

Bedrock

The magical properties of this record were related to me early on. This 45 represents the bedrock of any good soul collection. Many of the top soul DJs in SF told stories of when they took possession of it, and how their lives changed. Of course, you will move on to better, funkier, or more rare 45s, but it will always come back to this one.

Haha, not really. This is a great record that everybody knows and it can fill a dance floor at the right moment. But give me “Shake a Tail Feather” by James & Bobby Purify.

No, seriously, give me that.

Time, Place, Music

Not sure why I bought this one. I had just sold a Heavens To Betsy / Bratmobile split 7”, so maybe I felt I needed some new K Records / Kill Rock Stars vinyl for the collection. I mean, I listened to the first song and it was pretty good.

It’s like when you live in a certain time and place and you are aware of some band or movie but you don’t get around to listening to them until about 12 years later. For me, My Bloody Valentine is a good example. I remember hearing about them in high school, but waited until 2003 to buy “Loveless” on LP. Then it sat for three more years while I discovered country music. So, I discovered MBV in 2006.

So, yeah, the Gossip. Rock on. You were great in “Burn To Shine: Portland”.
